The Lancelot-Grail Reader

Garland has published a paperback one-volume compilation (430 pages) from the five-volume English translation of Lancelot-Grail: The Old French Arthurian Vulgate and Post-Vulgate in Translation. The new volume, titled The Lancelot-Grail Reader, is edited by Norris Lacy (but includes translations by all nine original translators). Instead of trying to condense material or to offer a great many small excerpts, Lacy chose to reprint longer and more significant sections, joined by very brief summaries intended simply to permit readers to follow the entire story. Included are portions of all five romances of the Vulgate, followed by an appendix offering several Post-Vulgate themes (e.g., the Questing Beast, the Dolorous Stroke) not included in the Vulgate. There are a brief introduction and a bibliography listing critical editions and a few major studies.
