ARTHURIAN ART

Henry Wallis (1830-1916)

Henry Wallis studied art at Carey's, at the Royal Academy Schools in 1848, and later at Gleyre's in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1853. In 1856, his popularity increased with the exhibition of the Pre-Raphaelite picture, The Death of Chatterton. Wallis ran off with George Meredith's wife and married her shortly afterward. The poet Meredith happened to have acted as Wallis' model for Chatterton. In 1859, Wallis inherited a fortune that while it allowed him to live independently, it also killed much of his artistic drive. He worked greatly in watercolors, and became RWS in 1880.
